Minds that Wonder.
Leaders who Rise.
Executive & Leadership Coaching
Melanie Whelan ~ Executive & Leadership Coach
Meet Melanie
After 34 amazing years at the FDA, I found myself standing at a crossroads, wondering out loud: What’s next? Decades in leadership had left me with so many questions like, what makes people tick? Why do some individuals naturally take charge while others shine in the background? How can one right conversation, at just the right moment, change absolutely everything? And what happens when we dare to be fearlessly authentic? The biggest question of all:
What did I want to do with all that I had learned?
Turns out, wondering can get you somewhere.
Over those 34 years, I had the opportunity to lead, learn, listen, challenge the status quo, and work alongside all kinds of people, who all had their own story that I wanted to hear.
During those years, I discovered something about myself.
I always crave conversations.
The ones where someone stopped worrying about having the right answer and started asking questions. The conversations that included open ended questions where an idea that had been stuck suddenly moved. The ones where people felt safe enough to say what they were really thinking.
Those were the pivotal moments when I saw people grow. And I wanted more of those moments.
So I followed my curiosity.
What began as wondering, became my path forward.
I realized that the part of leadership I loved most had a name: coaching.
Not telling people what to do. Not handing out answers. And definitely not turning everyone into some textbook version of a “great leader.”
I wanted to create the kind of space where people could think out loud, challenge their own assumptions, wrestle with the hard stuff, and discover answers that actually felt like their own.
That’s still what I love about coaching today.
Asking Questions is My Superpower.
Some are big. Some are deceptively simple. Then there is always that one that really makes you dig deep.
I listen closely. I ask what others may not. I help create a space where you can be candid, curious, uncertain and ambitious, sometimes all at once.
I believe people do their best thinking when they feel seen, valued, and safe enough to speak their truth.
That’s when things start to move.
And that’s where leaders rise.
I believe great leadership begins with curiosity, about the people around us, the challenges in front of us, and ourselves.
It takes courage to keep growing. It takes confidence to change your mind. And it takes a certain kind of fearlessness to lead without pretending to be someone you’re not.
After 34 years at the FDA, I know a thing or two about organizations, change, people, and the realities of leadership.
But I also know this:
You don’t need someone with all the answers.
Sometimes, you just need the right conversation.
“Growing up” in the government taught me that true leadership isn't a title; it’s a mindset. I learned early on that to develop confident effective leaders, I had to embody those qualities myself.
My coaching philosophy is simple: be fearlessly authentic and choose to be curious, not furious. Navigating decades of public service taught me the profound impact of giving and receiving feedback in a way that is respectful and truly heard. Whether you are leading a major agency or masterfully managing your own portfolio, I am here to help you unpack challenges with curiosity, communicate with courage, and step into your own authentic leadership style.
